Cougar Spotlight: Barry Booth

–Barry Booth, MBA ‘21

Barry Booth is a retired police officer of 30 years and a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. In ��Ĵ�ý’s recent 2021 graduation, Booth received his Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. He is now planning to use his MBA to begin a new career in Columbia, SC.

When we asked why he chose this program, Barry told us it was to establish a building block for his career. Earning his MBA provided him with valuable lessons, experiences and information that he will need in his supervisory career.

As Barry completed his coursework, he was able to work a full-time job and take care of his family through the flexibility of ��Ĵ�ý Online.

When asked to provide advice to those considering starting or returning to school, Booth said “there is no time like the present to get started.” He also mentioned he believes it is important for students to look for a program that offers flexibility in their coursework, such as ��Ĵ�ý. This will allow you to easily and successfully manage family, school work and your career at the same time.

Tips to Succeed as a Busy Student

Are you interested in graduate school, but you are not sure if you can manage your work and home life too? With the flexibility of ��Ĵ�ý Online’s programs, and by following this S.T.U.D.Y. acronym, you can be a successful student even when faced with other responsibilities.

Seek help. Did you know that ��Ĵ�ý Online offers tutoring and individual meetings with your professors? If you are struggling with a class, you do not have to struggle alone. You can reach out to a student success coach, tutor, professor or fellow classmate. There is no shame in asking for help. Your ��Ĵ�ý Online community is ready to assist you in your education journey.

Take notes. When studying for an assignment, you need to have notes that will refresh your memory on what you have learned so far. Between family and work responsibilities, you might forget some details from class. If you take notes while reading and watching videos, it will make it easier to remember previous lessons. You can take hand-written notes or even type your notes. The more organized the notes, the better!

Use academic resources. When you begin at ��Ĵ�ý Online, you will be given information on how to access a variety of resources, including the library, Canvas, tutoring, IT help and career development. All of these programs are designed to help you succeed as an online student and save you time. Make sure to take advantage of them.

Delete distractions. Do you often check social media or sit in a noisy environment while studying? Distractions are everywhere and can keep you from concentrating on your schoolwork. As tempting as these distractions are, it is best to get rid of them to succeed in your studies. For example, silence your phone and sit in a quiet place, like a library, instead of Starbucks. While it may be hard to give up distractions, it will pay off in the long run!

Yearn for success. While in the midst of adult life and classes, you may feel overwhelmed at times. However, this does not mean you should quit. When these feelings arise, you should focus more on the reasons why you started and reach out to your ��Ĵ�ý family for support. The ��Ĵ�ý Online community is cheering you on every step of the way. Do not forget to cheer for yourself!

Cougar Spotlight: Meet Shakeva Frazier

My favorite thing about ��Ĵ�ý would be the faculty and staff. Throughout my educational experience, they have been nothing but supportive and patient. – Shakeva Frazier, BS ’20

Since Shakeva Frazier was 9 years old, it has been her dream to attend ��Ĵ�ý. In 2011, her daughter gave her an ��Ĵ�ý sticker and said, “Momma, you are going there one day.”

Shakeva said towards the end of her educational experience, she almost gave up. However, ��Ĵ�ý’s professors never gave up on her and continued to be patient, understanding, supportive, and encouraged her to keep pursuing her dreams.

In December of 2020, she was able to walk across ��Ĵ�ý’s stage to receive her diploma. Frazier graduated with a bachelor of science degree in sociology. With her newly earned degree, Shakeva says she would love to continue to work with youth and to pursue a career in trauma counseling.

Student Spotlight: April Rigney, BBA student

We are so excited to showcase April today as part of our series!

We recently asked April what is motivating her to earn her degree. She writes, “My motivation for obtaining my degree is to have the sense of accomplishment and to know that with my degree I will have so many more opportunities for the future as well as for my career. I don’t just want a job; I want a career!”

We asked April to share why she chose ��Ĵ�ý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program, and she writes, “I chose ��Ĵ�ý’s GPS Program because I am unable to attend due to my work schedule. Because of the , I can work on my classes early in the morning, late at night or even on the weekend. I have even taken my computer and worked on my classes while on vacation. It is flexible, so that I can achieve my goals on my time.”

We asked April to share one tip with her fellow and future classmates. She writes, “I have to share two tips, which are, do not procrastinate and use a planner. I am super organized and feel that this helps me to move from week to week more easily and when I feel over whelmed, I can look in my planner and see how I can get my assignments done one at a time.”

We asked April to share what keeps her motivated while in the , and she writes, “Honestly, what keeps me motivated in the program is the fact that I will be one of the only people in my family with a degree. My mother, father and grandmother will be so happy for me and I can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they get to see me receive my degree. It will be very special for me but even more for them.”

Student Spotlight: Meet J.J. Gold, Bachelor of Business Administration Student at Our Quantico Campus

We recently asked J.J. what is motivating him to earn his Bachelors degree, and he writes, “I’ve always wanted to pursue my college degree for as long as I can remember. However, my two beautiful kids give me the desire and motivation to keep pushing one week at a time month after month.”

We asked J.J. why he chose ��Ĵ�ý’s GPS Program, and he writes, “I chose ��Ĵ�ý’s GPS program because of Trish Nicols. Trish was one of ��Ĵ�ý’s recruiters, and she had a booth set up at my workplace along with other recruiters from different schools. After telling Trish my desire to pursue a college education she explained how the GPS program worked and I knew right away ��Ĵ�ý was the school for me.”

We asked J.J. to share one tip for his fellow classmates and future ��Ĵ�ý students… “Mind over matter! Remember you can do anything you set your mind on just keep pushing and make your dream come true.”

Lastly, we asked J.J. what keeps him motivated while in the BBA program, and he writes, “Walking by faith to achieve my goal and to set the example for my family and friends.”

Student Spotlight: Meet Mindi Trantham, Bachelor of Business Administration Student

Mindi works in the Education Office at the Newport News Shipbuilding, and has played a pivotal role in the success of our��members who work there with her. They have experienced challenges this year regarding their funding due to budget cuts and layoffs, and Mindi has been an amazing source of support for her fellow ��Ĵ�ý students, and for the staff here at AU, as she has assisted us in navigating new information and policies related to education funding in her organization.��

In addition to the important part she has played in the lives of her fellow colleagues and classmates, she is also an amazing student here at ��Ĵ�ý!

We recently asked Mindi what is motivating her to earn her BBA degree, and she writes, “My motivation is all personal fulfillment; the thought of setting a positive example for my children and building a future for my family. At this point in life, I felt obtaining my degree was a dream beyond my reach until my co-workers talked to me about their experience with ��Ĵ�ý and the GPS Program.”

We asked Mindi why she chose the AU GPS Program, and she writes, “The GPS Program allows me to attend class in a traditional setting and the schedule and workload are ideal. I attend class one night a week which allows me time to spend with my family as well as setting aside time for homework.”

We asked Mindi to share one tip with fellow and future AU students… “Follow your dreams and always believe in yourself. We can accomplish far more than we believe we are capable. Finally, NEVER give up.”

Finally, we asked Mindi what keeps her motivated while in the BBA program, and she writes, “The reward of personal gratification and my family are what keep me motivated. When I reach a “bump in the road” and life happens I recall my favorite poem, Footprints in the Sand… “It was then that I carried you.” And he certainly has…”

Mindi, we are truly honored that you have chosen ��Ĵ�ý for this important journey, and we are deeply grateful to you for your support of our program, and for your support of your fellow classmates there at the NN Shipbuilding. Student Spotlight: Meet Jennifer Gravely, Master of Education in Administration and Supervision Student

We recently asked Jennifer what is motivating her to earn her M.Ed. and she writes, “The main motivation for going back to school is so that I can have more doors open up for me professionally. While I have always enjoyed being in the classroom with my students, I have always thought I had more to offer the education system. I felt like I could create a greater impact on more students if I honed my leadership skills. Working on a master’s in administration and supervision fit the bill.”

We asked Jennifer why she chose ��Ĵ�ý’s Graduate & Professional Studies Program, and she writes, “The reason I selected ��Ĵ�ý’s GPS program over all others is for ease of access. I live in a rural area so even attending classes at the higher education center two nights a week seems overwhelming after finishing a full day at school only to have to meet for graduate classes and not get home until very late in the evening. With ��Ĵ�ý’s program, I have the flexibility to work on assignments on my time. I have been very pleased with the rigor and the platform.”

We asked Jennifer to share a few tips with fellow and future classmates…”The best tip I can give to fellow classmates about the GPS program is just to remember to utilize the discussion boards. I have learned so much from all of the others that are taking the classes with me. Their experiences have helped to broaden my knowledge and skill set.”

Lastly, we asked Jennifer what keeps her motivated while in the . She writes, “I have found that is because of the professionalism of the instructors, the in-depth conversations with my peers and the ease of access that keeps me motivated in the program.”

Student Spotlight: Ken Buckley, ASB Student

Meet Ken Buckley, who is currently working on his degree and is a future Bachelor Degree student!

We recently asked Ken what is motivating him to earn his Bachelors degree. He writes, “My biggest motivation for wanting to obtain my Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Science with a Concentration in Leadership was my personal need and desire to achieve this goal. At age 53, I have wanted to do it for many years but never took the first step. My wife and I took my oldest Step Son, Brad Booth, on many different college campus tours as he was deciding on what college to attend a few years ago. I think that is the moment I look back on that gave me the desire and confidence to return to college. Funny how we are supposed to motivate our children but my experience with him ended up motivating me.”

We asked Ken why he chose ��Ĵ�ý’s GPS Program, and he writes, “I chose ��Ĵ�ý’s GPS Program for many different reasons. The first was ��Ĵ�ý was close to me, I live in South Boston. Also, the staff that answered my many questions were very helpful, kind and generous with their time. I was impressed with my first meeting at the campus with my counselor – she was really great. The biggest reason was probably the flexibility of the courses. I still work a full time job and I like to spend time with my family and friends so this seemed like a perfect fit for me.”

We asked Ken to share a tip with fellow and future classmates…”My one tip for my fellow classmates and future students is to revel in your accomplishments as you achieve them. Break bigger goals in to smaller goals that are more attainable. Don’t wait until you graduate to celebrate – cherish the time while you are working on getting your degree because it will make your experience that much better and even more rewarding when you do get your degree.”

Lastly, we asked Ken to share what keeps him motivated while in his degree program. He writes, “My personal drive and commitment is what keeps me motivated. My wife Rhonda, has also been very helpful when my homework and/or work are overwhelming, she knows that I have limited time to help out around the house and she takes up the slack. As I just stated, self-motivation is key for me being successful in this type of program. I have also been getting a lot of support from people I work with. They have been great, sharing compliments and also checking in to see how I am doing.”

Ken has almost completed his first year of college, and looks forward to graduating with his Degree in 2017, and with his BAS Degree in 2019!
