Hello! My Name Is…

My name is Alana Rogers and I am a Registered Nurse at SOVAH Health Martinsville. I began my career at Martinsville as an Emergency Department Nurse and I have recently started a new journey as a Clinical Educator. My role is to help educate staff, coordinate a new graduate residency program and preceptor program. My hobbies revolve around my family, friends, and pets. I love being outside, hiking, fishing, and playing with my dogs and cat Asher, Mieka, and Tank. Hello! My Name Is…

Hi! My name is Jacqueline Chiha! I currently work for Unum, a life and disability insurance group, as sales support in Charlotte, NC. I graduated from East Carolina University in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Human Development and Family Sciences. Upon graduating I explored a few different job opportunities and decided to take the business route. I am one of four children, three of which are also ECU graduates! Moving to Charlotte was new for me as I had only visited twice before moving here immediately after graduating from ECU, so my hobbies include exploring the city with my dogs and boyfriend! I also enjoy visiting with my family located in Apex, NC on weekends, hanging out and catching up with friends, reading, and shopping!

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

My motivation for obtaining my degree is having the ability to eventually further my career into a management role within my company. I want to expand my knowledge of the industry as I took only one undergraduate business course. I believe it is important to learn as much as I can about the industry before being placed in a leadership position.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I chose Ĵý because it is a smaller school than what I am used to. ECU treated me well, however, it is nice to be in a smaller classroom setting and makes it easier to interact with all my professors and advisors. When I initially reached out to Ĵý to find out more information on the program, everyone I interacted with was so friendly and always so helpful and inviting. This drew me in and finalized my decision on attending Ĵý. This has been one of the best college experiences for me and I can’t wait to continue with my courses!

How has your degree from ĴýUniversity assisted you in your career?

My office is a Field Office, which means we are very small. There are 35 employees in our office and we are the only North Carolina office. Our headquarters are in Chattanooga, TN and Portland, ME. Our HR department is located in our home offices, so because of the distance I sometimes take on HR approved tasks for the office. My degree has helped me out a lot so far! I have been able to apply concepts to different tasks I carry out throughout the week. I have also paid attention to the work environment mood more than I have in the past. It is satisfying to know how to shift the work environment mood, and how to properly deal with disagreements within the office.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

Advice I would give to incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program is to manage your work and stick to a schedule. Sticking to a schedule helps me not procrastinate my work and helps me to effectively manage my expectations. It is also important to take time to relax, so sticking to a schedule helps me have two days off from work and school a week. It is always important to take time to relax! Finally, if you are ever stuck or need someone to reach out to who understands, always reach out to your classmates! Although it is an online program, it truly is what you make it and I have made life-long friendships with classmates through this program. You are never alone at Ĵý!

Although it is an online program, it truly is what you make it and I have made life-long friendships with classmates through this program. You are never alone at Ĵý!
What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

What keeps me motivated is coming to work every day. When I come to work it’s a constant reminder of where I ultimately want to be in a few years. It makes me work hard for my degree, so I can move up the ladder and help Unum continue to thrive!

Hello! My Name Is…

Hi! I’m Angela Clarke! I am currently an employee at Dominion Energy and I work in the New Technology department, where we process Net Metering applications. I am a mother of two boys that are 22 and 23 and a two year old grand-daughter. Some of my hobbies include bowling, going to the beach, traveling, amusement parks and drag racing.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

I believe that many of us graduate from high school and we are pushed by our parents to go to college because that seems like the “right” thing to do. Unfortunately, some of us do not have a clue as to what we want to do or where we want to be in life. Well, I was one of those kids that did not know what I wanted to do. Before I knew it, I had kids, got married and the family life took over and I never ended attending as planned.

I have been through several layoffs since 2008 that really created the foundation and “pushed” me to return to college to further my education. As the education levels and job competition has increased, I realized that I needed to make myself more competitive within the workforce. I graduated in 2016 from Ĵý with a Bachelor of Business Administration, with Magna Cum Laude and a 3.65 GPA. I recently returned to obtain my MBA with a concentration in Human Resource Management. I chose Ĵý because I already had an established relationship and I knew how the program worked. It was very easy to return start my MBA program.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I originally became interested in Ĵý because my sister had attended and graduated with her BBA. I looked into the programs and liked the fact that they offered classes online and within the classroom. The GPS program at Ĵý is designed to cater to those that have a busy lifestyle such as work, family and all the other things that happen in life. The hours in the classroom are great because they are usually one day a week for four hours and fell conveniently after my work schedule. The classes online allow you to work more independently, but you have to be more self-motivated to ensure you meet the deadlines.

The GPS program at Ĵý is designed to cater to those that have a busy lifestyle such as work, family and all the other things that happen in life.

How has your degree from ĴýUniversity assisted you in your career?

Obtaining my degree form Ĵý has allowed me to make myself more promotable in the workforce. I can now say that I have the knowledge and the degree for those jobs that interest me and I am given more opportunities by employers when they review my resume.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

As stated earlier, the Ĵý GPS Program is awesome and they are designed for working adults that are interested in furthering their education. They are flexible and you are not pushed to complete more than one class at a time, which allows me more time to focus on that particular subject. The classes usually range from 6-10 weeks, depending on the class.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

My kids are my biggest motivator. I want them to see and understand that no matter how old you get, where you came from or where you have been, it is never too late to fulfill your dreams. As an adult learner, I have become my own motivator and I tend to take things more seriously now versus when I was younger, especially knowing I will be paying for this tuition once I complete my program. That in itself is motivation to do the best I can and give it all I’ve got.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

My anticipated graduation is next year. I will have my last course completed by spring or summer, assuming I stay on my current path. Anticipating that my grades stay as they are, I will be graduating with honors when I receive my MBA with a concentration in Human Resource Management degree.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

I want to start my own company. A nonprofit organization that helps youth, gives back to the community, and promotes unity for a bigger brighter future.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

Ĵý is close to home and a very good school according to the people of Danville, VA and the surrounding area.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

Choose a program that you are interested in. Keep your eyes on the future and not the present events in life to help you stay focused and make good grades. That way any missed events with friends and family won’t get you down or bring your grades down.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

The hope of fulfilling my dreams as well as showing friends and family that hard work does pay off. That no matter how life turns out, what curve balls are thrown at you and no matter who does or doesn’t believe in you and support you, if you set your mind to it, you can make it if you try.

From a couch at Ĵý’s Riverview Campus, to an office in Folsom, California, Ĵý alumnus Kevin Jang ’15, ’17, attributes his success to three things: the values his parents instilled in him at a young age, being a student in the Ĵý GPS program and his work at Infinity Global.

“Never lose the hustle. If I wasn’t going to school, and working here (at Infinity Global) at the same time, I would have never developed the hustle that I have. I attribute that to the MBA program at Ĵý and this company. That work ethic and gumption will always stay with me.”

He calls it his transformation process in which he learned his potential.

Kevin Jang was born and raised in South Korea. As a young boy, he says his parents asked him if he wanted to go to middle school in China. At the time, Kevin dropped out of elementary school to chase his passion of becoming a pro gamer; however, Kevin’s parents were so worried that he was making such a big decision at a young age that they wanted to broaden Kevin’s perspective by giving him more opportunities in another country. Instead of questioning his parents, he trusted them, and as a 12-year-old boy he left home.

“I simply noticed the importance both countries, China and Korea, put on learning English and realized that there is no escaping it regardless of where I went. That really opened my eyes and I knew that, from my experience of learning Chinese, the best way to learn a language is to completely immerse yourself in that culture.”

Jang says all the children in China already knew the English language, something he was behind in and that made him feel inferior.

“I thought to myself, I should be able to speak English as well but at the time, I barely knew the alphabet.” That pushed him to work harder.

“My objective of going to America was quite simple: to learn the language, English. But during my journey, I gained much more than just that. I loved the freedom and the diverse education it provided. I was able to blossom in the right culture and assimilate in a positive way. I was learning English at that time, without knowing the full benefits it would bring later in my future, such as being able to lead international projects involving European, American and Asian clients, helping manage distribution centers in 11 different countries and more.”

Jang came to America in 2007. He attended Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Va. from 2008-2012. Starting high school, he could speak Korean and Chinese, but barely any English. So he enrolled in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program with other international students. He took one year of the three-year program and tested out to graduate early.

Always looking towards the next step, his higher education journey led him to Ĵý for its “love for diversity.”

“I received the Presidential scholarship and without that, I would not be here,” he said. “Without Ĵý’s love for diversity, I would not be here. After receiving the scholarship and researching the University, I found that Ĵý really embraced not only domestic diversity, but international diversity as well.”

“Without Ĵý’s love for diversity, I would not be here. After receiving the scholarship and researching the University, I found that Ĵý really embraced not only domestic diversity, but international diversity as well.”

He did not obtain his green card until his second semester in Ĵý. This was an important and timely goal for Jang, because as a permanent resident, he could obtain working status, which was crucial for him to stay and excel at Ĵý. He wanted to have a full-time job while being a full-time student because it was important for his family.

“This meant that I was able to legally work to finally support my parents financially. They have been struggling economically for a while and it had been weighing on my heart for quite some time. It was a huge relief for our family.”

It was in his second year when he landed his first job as a marketing analyst at a start-up company, AllergEase, which later proved to be a crucial stepping stone for his future. He said it was his academic advisor at Ĵý who helped him get an interview with AllergEase.

“Without this opportunity, I’m not sure where I would be now.”

Working and going to school full-time, Kevin occasionally utilized one of the empty classrooms at Ĵý’s Riverview Campus to catch some rest during his break.

“I often felt sleep-deprived. So during my break at AllergEase, I would walk across the street, turn off the lights and put my head down for a minute at Riverview.”

Just trying to rest one day between school work and work, on a couch in one of the classrooms, Jang woke up to a conversation that would change his life.

That’s when Carly Pearce, executive director for Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) student services, found Jang. She realized his work ethic and potential, and offered him a job as her graduate student teaching assistant. This meant he would be able to get his master’s degree.

“The fact that I was able to earn my master’s degree without the financial burden is what really meant a lot to me personally, as my family has been struggling monetarily.”

“The fact that I was able to earn my master’s degree without the financial burden is what really meant a lot to me personally, as my family has been struggling monetarily.”

Jang started working for Pearce after receiving his undergraduate degree. Around that time, he got a new job at Infinity Global because AllergEase was leaving the area.

That summer, Jang had quite the busy schedule.

“I would work daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Infinity Global, on Tuesdays I had class from 6-10 p.m., and Monday through Friday, I also worked as a GA from 6-10 p.m. From Monday through Friday, I couldn’t do anything. I didn’t have time nor energy to go out or network. I barely made time to go to the gym to decompress and recharge, just to get home right around midnight to repeat the same hustle the next day.

“I told myself that you have to do it, you don’t have an option. On the weekends, all my time was dedicated to working on my academics – writing papers, preparing presentations and collaborating with classmates on group projects – and catching up on sleep. I do remember going to sleep Saturday morning and waking up Sunday morning, saying to myself, ‘did I really lose a day? I’ve got to put in extra work to make up for the lost time!’ I was focused.”

It was that focus that now has Jang promoted to a new job with Infinity Global in California, working directly with the senior vice president as a business operations analyst.

“At Infinity Global, we look for people that possess three key things. We are looking for people who are hungry, humble and smart. Kevin possesses all three of these things and it is why he has been successful in his various positions at Infinity Global. Having Kevin in California allows me to work with him on a more frequent basis and will help him develop his career with us more quickly,” said Kevin Palmer, senior vice president.

Kevin’s position as Business Operations Analyst was designed to help Infinity Global improve its departmental reporting and create key performance indicators that will allow departmental managers to improve the management of their workload, their direct reports and projects.

“I’ll look back to the experience I had at Ĵý and will always be grateful.”

Hello! My Name Is…

Hello, my name is Briana and I am currently a Sales Executive for The Knot (#1 Wedding Brand), located in NYC. I am a graduate of the University of Toledo with a Bachelors in Business Administration. Working full-time and commuting to NYC every day from New Jersey I knew I needed a flexible program with many resources available at any time.Ĵý has been everything I imagined so far and I am very happy with the choice I’ve made.

Hello! My Name Is…

Hello, my name is Jarrod Saunders. I am originally from Danville, VA, and currently live in Portsmouth, VA. I am a middle school Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher for Suffolk Public School, and a part-time chef at Olive Garden. I am an only child, and my hobbies include working out, listening to music, watching stand-up comedy, and interacting with like-minded people, to name a few.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

My motivation for obtaining my degree here at Ĵý is to be able to obtain a career in Human Resources, that will allow me to live a fulfilling and rewarding life, as well as assisting other people in achieving their dreams and goals.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies Program mainly because of the hometown connection. The elementary school I attended is located close to Ĵý. I remember admiring the campus everyday as I rode by, and it means a lot 30 years later, to further my education from the first university I was ever introduced to.

Also, I have witnessed the growth of Ĵý over the past 30 years, and I am proud to be a part of a university that is continuouslymoving forward.

How has your degree from Ĵý assisted you in your career?

Although I am still in the process of pursuing my degree, I have noticed how the MBA program has already made me a better person career wise, and also on a personal level. It has taught me not to be narrow-minded, and to look at situations from multiple viewpoints. The main benefit I have observed is that it has taught me to make decisions, and solve problems based on logic, and not emotion. It has improved my researching, writing, and analytical skills, and solving complex situationshas become easier to manage.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

Advice I would share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program is to first of all, have a positive mindset. Reduce or remove the people and things that don’t provide you with positive energy. Other than having a positive mindset, I recommend proper planning, and try to find a balance between family/friends, schoolwork, everyday life, hobbies, and proper rest. “Brain Breaks” have become my best friend. When working on assignments, sometimes I find it beneficial to take a 15-30 minute break to regroup, reset, and refocus.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

What keeps me motivated while in the degree program is keeping my eyes on the big picture. On a daily basis, I take a few moments to visualize myself walking across the stage, obtaining my diploma. What also keeps me motivated is the anticipation of the future career opportunities, and living a comfortable lifestyle.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

Ĵý, Class of 2019!

Hello! My Name Is…

My name is Cole Green. I come from a small town in Northern Michigan of about 580 people. I am one of seven siblings and everyone is back home still. I love anything outdoors and grew up spending as much time outside as possible. For work, I currently am a Group Sales Manager at Marriott International. I work from home full-time while I stick around Danville for the meantime. I book groups at 20 hotels in the Northern Virginia Market. I love people and have a passion for helping them!

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

I want it to help me shift focus later on in my career. Thinking of the future is what keeps me motivated and not dwelling on the past. Time is of the essence in everything we do. The classes go by fast in the program so you have to be motivated before you even start!

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I really wanted to go back to school for an MBA. My life all changed based on wanting to move and start over if you will. When I ended up in Danville I stumbled upon Ĵý. Once I spoke to admissions and learned more about the program I knew it was right for me. The schedule works great so far for a full-time working professional.

Whether in person or online, the classes offered are relevant in today’s workforce.

How has your degree from Ĵý assisted you in your career?

So far I am only two classes in but it has given me something else to talk about in an interview. I have been interviewing internally and externally for my next challenge. This has already helped me stand out to recruiters.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

If you can take class in person, do it. I really enjoyed the in-person classes. I have switched to full-time on-line classes recently and it is still great. I just think hearing a lecture helps expand your own thoughts on a topic. You have to come into this ready to write and be able to relate this all to your real-world experience. Take each week as it comes. Pay attention to due dates and keep with the schedule.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

Honestly, the learning of new information and gaining insight from my peers helps push me through this. I have already met great people in this program and they help push you through it.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

Ĵý, May of 2020!

Hello! My Name Is…

My name is Rhonda Lawson. I currently work in the financial sector where I provide support to investors who take out securities commitments. My husband and I have three grandchildren and a fourth on the way next month, so family is very important to me. I also enjoy spending time with my seven year old white German shepherd and I make a commitment in taking at least two family vacations a year to places that we have never been. I love learning about different cultures and tasting different foods. In my spare time I enjoy reading poetry; my favorite writings are from Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

I never had the privilege of going to college after graduating high school, but I always had the desire to complete higher education. So one day when I turned 45 years old I made it a goal that before I turned 50 years old, I would obtain my Bachelors of Business Administration.

For me Maya Angelou said it best, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you”. My untold story is I always had the desire to obtain a degree, but as time passed raising a family and working full time I never focused on it. However, the agony of not knowing if I could have obtained my degree that I had the chance bothered me. So, I did not want the question of not knowing how much I could have grown or whether I could have completed a degree to go unanswered. Being able to tell my story one day to someone and to be able to inspire them is my motivation.

For me Maya Angelou said it best, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you”.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I chose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies Program because of its flexibility and easy format for an adult learner. Having a full time job and other responsibilities sometimes leaves a little or no time to do other things. In addition, my current job is in the financial sector and can be at times mentally draining, so there are days when I just do not have the energy. Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies Program was the perfect fit because I knew once I started I had to finish so in order for me to be successful I needed a format of learning that gave me the ability to complete the assignments within the courses without added stress. Ĵý’s program offered the best structure for an adult learner so I enrolled.

How has your degree from Ĵý assisted you in your career?

After completing my BBA in 2016, I was selected by my employer to take part in a financial industry accreditation program. Ĵý’s learning structure played a key role in me being able to successfully complete the industry certification program in Finance. This was a stepping stone to the next level within the industry that I work.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

Surround yourselves with those who encourage learning. Set a specific date in which you will start and always keep the vision of completing and receiving your degree in front of you. Do not hesitate. Get started now!

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

I enrolled in Ĵý’s MBA program right after obtaining my BBA so staying motivated is so important to successfully completing a degree program. I surround myself with individuals who encourage learning especially as an adult learner. My biggest supporter is my husband Terrance who continues to sacrifice in order for me to reach my personal goals. Now that I am enrolled in Ĵý’s MBA program, I continue to focus on personal growth with the view of inspiring others who are older. Learning never stops, it is continuous and Ĵý’s degree program is the perfect structure in meeting the course requirements without stress.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

Ĵý, Class of 2019!
