Although success can be defined in many distinctly-different ways ~ from monetary and material to academic and adventures experienced, there is a commonality among all successful people: they have exceptional organizational skills. Highly-organized individuals never miss an appointment, are never late for a meeting, never misplace their keys or their phone, accomplish more in 24 hours than the average person, experience little stress, and are, yet, still flexible and resilient. How is it possible to be both highly-organized and a joy to be around? Simple. Highly-organized people keep certain habits.

Habit #1: They wake up early.

For highly-organized people, waking up before the birds is not a burden, a challenge, or an option. They savor the mornings for routines that nurture their mind, body, and soul. Sleeping in until 9 AM every morning or repeatedly hitting the snooze button on the alarm clock just isn鈥檛 appealing to them. They devote the pre-sunrise time to meditation, prayer, a healthy breakfast, exercise, stretching, yoga, walking Fido, inspirational reading, and/or journaling. They get up earlier 鈥 not to get more stuff done, but to savor time continuing to develop into their best selves.Waking up early creates time to ease into the day calmly and purposefully.

Habit #2: They have a place for everything.

Yes, everything is somewhere; however, for highly-organized folks, specifically where everything is placed is done mindfully. Immediately putting things back in their designated spots enables organized individuals to avoid harried searches at the last minute for keys, phones, shoes, notebooks, important papers, jackets, and other material things that are regularly used. In addition, highly-organized people don鈥檛 waste money having to buy what they already have (but can鈥檛 find). They know what鈥檚 in their freezer, their closet, and their toolbox. Taking a moment to return something to its perfect place both saves time and eliminates undue stress.

Habit #3: They get the hardest, less-desirable projects done first.

Sure, it may initially seem more enjoyable to eat the icing off the cake first, but for highly-organized people, they can withhold that common need for instant gratification. They鈥檝e gotten in the habit of delaying what鈥檚 easy or most appealing so they can roll up their sleeves and get the hardest work done first. Mark Twain had it right when he said, 鈥Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.鈥 Doing the less-desirable task first makes everything that has to be done after it a breeze.

Habit #4: They write stuff down.

Whether typed in a laptop, handwritten within the pages of a leather-bound journal, scribbled on post-it notes, jotted on a calendar, or listed on a whiteboard, highly-organized people take notes and write stuff down somewhere. Keeping track of brainstormed ideas and seemingly-inflexible deadlines and commitments enables the highly-organized person to be free of that stress-inducing mental 鈥渢o do鈥 list. The highly-organized person never has to return to the grocery store for that missing ingredient they forgot or apologize for forgetting a luncheon. By writing stuff down, no project misses a deadline, no appointment gets missed, and promises made are promises kept.

Habit #5: They are present in the moment.

It鈥檚 easy to spot highly-organized people at a restaurant, behind the wheel of a vehicle, or in line at the movie theatre 鈥 they鈥檙e the ones who aren鈥檛 on their phone. Organized people are great listeners, attentive, and look people in the eyes when they鈥檙e engaged in a conversation with them. They never seem unsettled or distracted. Highly-organized people are able to live in the moment. They don鈥檛 need to be constantly checking their phone (or even have it turned on) when they鈥檙e enjoying time with family, friends, or even themselves. When you鈥檙e with an organized person, you know you don鈥檛 have to vie for their time and attention against some electronic gizmo or gadget. By being present in the moment, highly-organized people naturally draw people to them.

Habit #6: They make time for the important things.

Whether enjoying a family vacation, earning a college or advanced degree, practicing an instrument, learning a foreign language, or tending their home鈥檚 garden, highly-organized people always make time for what matters most to them. They鈥檙e do-ers, not dreamers. They make time, not excuses. Because they embrace life鈥檚 most precious commodity, highly-organized people get it. They understand that no one is guaranteed the next minute 鈥 so they embrace every moment of each day.

Habit #7: They use technology wisely.

Wasting hours in frivolous texting, constantly checking emails, hanging out on social media platforms, or talking on the phone about topics already exhausted are not habits in which you鈥檒l find a highly-organized person engaged. Instead, they use technology to their advantage and not as a distraction or energy drain. They designate specific times during their work hours to return voice, text, and email messages 鈥 thus never entangling work鈥檚 responsibilities with technology-free family time. Embracing technology as a tool instead of a distraction enables the highly-organized person to get more done in less time.

Habit #8: They don鈥檛 put off for tomorrow what can be done today.

If it鈥檚 a choice between watching a movie they鈥檝e already seen and watching the night sky鈥檚 star-filled show, they鈥檒l pick the latter. If it鈥檚 a choice between a Sunday afternoon picnic at the park with their family and friends or cranking their elbow at the local watering hole for happy hour, they鈥檒l choose the former. As a result, they rarely 鈥 if ever 鈥 experience stress, anxiety, or procrastination. They always get done what they planned to get today, and often get a head start on tomorrow’s goals.

Habit #9: They are proactive problem-solvers.

As much as highly-organized people live in the moment and are wholeheartedly present wherever they are, they also are in the habit of being proactive and thinking ahead to avoid or deter potential problems. Highly-organized people have an umbrella handy, available credit on their plastic, and a full tank of gas. They鈥檙e the ones with sunscreen, extra water bottles, Kleenex, and hand sanitizer. They’re the ones you’ll want to call if you miss a college class or can’t remember next week’s course assignment. It鈥檚 not that they鈥檙e compulsive; it鈥檚 that they鈥檙e thoughtful (and organized). They bring to the party what no one else thought of and what everyone else is so grateful for.

Habits don’t discriminate; anyone can have good habits or bad habits. Highly-organized people are not born that way. Instead, they鈥檝e become that way as a result of choosing highly-effective habits. Which habits are you choosing?

Meet Ken Buckley, who is currently working on his degree and is a future Bachelor Degree student!

We recently asked Ken what is motivating him to earn his Bachelors degree. He writes, 鈥淢y biggest motivation for wanting to obtain my Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Applied Science with a Concentration in Leadership was my personal need and desire to achieve this goal. At age 53, I have wanted to do it for many years but never took the first step. My wife and I took my oldest Step Son, Brad Booth, on many different college campus tours as he was deciding on what college to attend a few years ago. I think that is the moment I look back on that gave me the desire and confidence to return to college. Funny how we are supposed to motivate our children but my experience with him ended up motivating me.鈥

We asked Ken why he chose 糖心传媒鈥檚 GPS Program, and he writes, 鈥淚 chose 糖心传媒鈥檚 GPS Program for many different reasons. The first was 糖心传媒 was close to me, I live in South Boston. Also, the staff that answered my many questions were very helpful, kind and generous with their time. I was impressed with my first meeting at the campus with my counselor 鈥 she was really great. The biggest reason was probably the flexibility of the courses. I still work a full time job and I like to spend time with my family and friends so this seemed like a perfect fit for me.鈥

We asked Ken to share a tip with fellow and future classmates鈥︹滿y one tip for my fellow classmates and future students is to revel in your accomplishments as you achieve them. Break bigger goals in to smaller goals that are more attainable. Don鈥檛 wait until you graduate to celebrate 鈥 cherish the time while you are working on getting your degree because it will make your experience that much better and even more rewarding when you do get your degree.鈥

Lastly, we asked Ken to share what keeps him motivated while in his degree program. He writes, 鈥淢y personal drive and commitment is what keeps me motivated. My wife Rhonda, has also been very helpful when my homework and/or work are overwhelming, she knows that I have limited time to help out around the house and she takes up the slack. As I just stated, self-motivation is key for me being successful in this type of program. I have also been getting a lot of support from people I work with. They have been great, sharing compliments and also checking in to see how I am doing.鈥

Ken has almost completed his first year of college, and looks forward to graduating with his Degree in 2017, and with his BAS Degree in 2019! Ken, thank you so much for your wonderful testimony, spirit, and advice! You are an amazing student, and we are very honored to have you here as a member of the听

We recently asked Robert what is motivating him to earn his degree. He writes, 鈥淢y motivation for obtaining my degree is the fact that I don鈥檛 want anything to be able to hinder me from any promotion or career move that I choose to pursue in the future. Everyone knows that in order to compete for advancements and promotions, higher education is a must.鈥

We asked Robert why he chose 糖心传媒鈥檚 GPS Program. 鈥淢y motivation for choosing the 糖心传媒 GPS program was how much my co-workers spoke highly of their programs and enjoyed their experience obtaining their degrees at 糖心传媒. The professors are consistent in showing that their mission is every students success. Also I feel like their Business program had everything that I was looking for and suited my needs the best.鈥

We asked Robert to share a tip with his fellow and future classmates and he writes, 鈥淥ne tip that I would like to share with my fellow classmates or future 糖心传媒 students would be to always take the time to savor each moment of their lives. In life鈥檚 journey always make time for yourself and enjoy the true treasures in life being family, friends, and opportunities to help people along the way.鈥

Lastly, we asked Robert what keeps him motivated while in the program. 鈥淢y motivation for pushing through this program is the fact that I have done the hardest part in getting started. This is one thing that I need to accomplish in order to reach my full potential in my career as well as my degree being a personal goal. Honestly I really enjoy the challenge.鈥

Robert, we are so grateful for you, and thank you so much for your wonderful testimony and advice! We are honored that you have chosen 糖心传媒 for this very important goal of yours, and we applaud you on taking a chance and getting started. We look forward to celebrating graduation with you in 2018!
