Hello! My Name Is…

My name is Matthew! I have 2 jobs. I work full time for the University of Virginia Health System as a Patient Access Coordinator for the Revenue Cycle. My other job is being the General Manager of a DJ Company, tellAplay Entertainment. Born and raised in Fluvanna County, and now residing in Charlottesville. My hobbies include going to new restaurants around town, going to the movies, and playing Pokémon Go. 😊

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

My motivation for getting my degree at Ĵý is not only for me, but for my future family. I am going to be settling down in a couple of years with the love of my life. That means I need to do all I can to make sure I take care of and put my family first. Plus, who doesn’t want their name framed on a diploma with that classy Old English font.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I chose the GPS Program because it made the most sense and works with my busy schedule. I was recommended to apply to Ĵý by a family friend who graduated with his degree, and his daughter is also graduating with a degree. Once I applied, I had talked with my Student Success Coach and they really are there to help you and motivate you to chase your goals.

How has your degree from ĴýUniversity assisted you in your career?

I haven’t gotten my degree yet, but I am making strides to make it happen “soon.” By “soon” I mean a couple of more years, but not everyone’s journey is the same. It took a lot of ups and downs to get this far. And once I get the degree, I am going to feel so much pride in myself and proud to be a Cougar for life!

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

Advice I would give is first buy yourself a daily planner, or at least be tech savvy enough with the calendar on your phone. You are going to want to write in due dates for assignments, start and end dates for your classes, and don’t wait until last minute to do all your work. Time management is key. If you ever have questions use your resources, email your teacher, give a random call to your Student Success Coach to remind you why you are there and what your goals are. You got this, remember that!

You got this, remember that!

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

My motivation is that it is no longer about me, yes this is my degree but I have so many people in my corner that have always seen something in me that I could never see. It took a lot of trial and error to find a program that worked for me. That’s why I am so motivated to complete the Ĵý GPS Program, so all those people that believe in me can see the man I know I can be.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

My anticipated if I go all out with the program would be Fall 2021, but it is important to always take time for yourself. I’m still fresh in the GPS Program, so every semester I talk to my coach and we make a plan that will keep me on track. I look forward to the day that I can walk across the stage and say “Not only did I do it, but everyone here did it! GO COUGARS!”

Hello! My Name Is…

Hi! My name is Takoda! My career is in the Business Administration program which I hope I can either move up into management or start my own business. My hobbies include writing fiction and poetry. I get asked all the time where my name comes from and Takoda is actually a Native American name meaning, “a friend to everyone.” My parents are part Blackfoot and Cherokee, but the name comes from the Sioux tribe.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

My motivation is to keep striving making myself a little bit better every day. With this degree I can branch out to more and better companies who can see the potential within me.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I chose the GPS program because I cannot afford to go physically, and I’ve seen my friends, family members, and co-workers struggle paying off student debt because they didn’t work full-time or goofed off and had to drop out having taken out more than one student loan. My motto is “work smarter not harder.” The GPS program is very flexible as well and they give you the tools and mentors needed for success.

The GPS program is very flexible as well and they give you the tools and mentors needed for success.

How has your degree from ĴýUniversity assisted you in your career?

As someone who is on their way to getting a Bachelor’s degree, it has opened a few doors that I couldn’t open a year ago such as a back-up manager position.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

I would tell anyone to keep a planner with you at all times so you can keep up with assignments and when they are due. Also, start on essays at least two weeks before it is due.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

My current job keeps me motivated that I will find a better one because I am currently tied down with a contract to keep reimbursements. Another motivation is my grandmother who passed before I received my Associates degree. I want to not only be successful is business, but also be a successful author. It lets me know there is always something better.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

My anticipated date of graduation is hopefully the end of fall semester of 2019.

Business gets more complex all the time, which means there’s no standing still. You must constantly learn new skills if you want to keep up, much less get ahead. That’s why so many working adults have school on their radar—and not just so they can say they have a degree. They know the right combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in business and management can position them to take the next leap in their careers.

Here’s where Ĵý comes in. We specialize in helping working adults move from point A to point B with a BBA, or Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Whether you’re eying a promotion in your current company or you want to venture into new territory, this practical online program will prepare you for the challenge. Need more convincing? Check out these reasons to go after your BBA in 2019.

  • Getting a BBA is a great idea at any age. It may be a little easier to go to school when you’re 18 than when you’re 28 or 38, but it’s still doable. Online programs like Ĵý’s give you the flexibility to fit school around the rest of your life.
  • More education qualifies you for more opportunities. Having a BBA degree on your resume automatically puts you in the running for jobs requiring that level of education. Even if it’s not required, the extra horsepower can make the difference between you and another candidate.
  • A bigger view of the world makes you more valuable. Don’t let anyone tell you that what you learn in school won’t help in the real world. Ĵý professors have been there. They teach what you need to impress your boss or a potential new employer.
  • New possibilities will arise. In a BBA degree program, you study a wide range of topics including accounting, human resource management, marketing and economics. Who knows? You might just find a new calling.
  • Going to school puts a spotlight on your ambition. Employers know it takes a lot of gumption to work and go to school at the same time. Just taking the initiative to improve yourself with a BBA shows you’re willing to take on more responsibility.
  • A BBA prepares you for an MBA. If earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree is on your bucket list, a BBA from Ĵý is the logical next step. Ĵý will help you build the foundation you need to become an executive-level leader.

Few investments return more value than a good education. Ĵý’s online BBA degree program is affordable, accredited and tailor-made for busy adults. It’s 2019—time to invest in your future.

Hello! My Name Is…

My name is Amber and I’m from Richmond, Virginia. I enjoy spending time with my amazing husband and my energetic three-year-old son Caleb. We enjoy vacationing on the beach or river and when I’m not with my friends or family, I’m snuggled up with a good book or a good show on Netflix. My faith also plays a very important part in my life and helps drive me to always pursue and seek betterment.

I currently work as an executive administrative assistant in Support Services and Planning Administration and for the Chief of Perioperative Services at VCU Health Systems in Richmond and I love my job and colleagues.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

There are several key motivating factors for obtaining my degree. I completed my associate’s degree 11 years ago and have always vowed to go back but always found a reason to put it off. The time is now and it feels right. I have the support and backing of my husband and son who are also a huge motivating factor for me. I want my son to see me as an example to always go after your dreams and never to hold yourself back from great possibilities. Of course, this program always opens up the opportunity for career advancement, which is also bonus.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

The Ĵý GPS program was recommended by a colleague who completed the same program successfully a couple of years ago. I did my research, talked with my assigned academic counselor and it felt right. The program fit around my schedule and was an affordable option, so I jumped at the opportunity to attend.

The program fit around my schedule and was an affordable option, so I jumped at the opportunity to attend.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

Set aside the time! Unfortunately, there just aren’t enough hours in a day but setting aside the necessary time to study and complete assignments is key. Remember to keep in the forefront your motivation for going back and this will help drive your determination to give your all.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

There may be times I think “what did I get myself into?” but remembering the benefits that will derive from this program far outweighs those negative feelings. As a mom, wife and full-time employee, it’s been crucial to remember my goals and that every course completed gets me one step closer to graduation.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

My anticipated date of graduation is 2020.

Hello! My Name Is…

Hi My Name is Sherlon Ligon-Ayala. I currently work for the Federal Government at the US Department of Housing and Development for over 30 years! I have been married going on 12 years and have two children. My son attends Valdosta State University and my daughter is in middle school.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

My motivation for obtaining my degree at Ĵý was my family. I wanted to show my children that it can be done. After losing my parents when I was in High School my motivation to attend college was not there, I went to college but did not apply myself. As I got older and began to heal I wanted to go back to school to get my degree to be able to apply for advancement positions at my job.

Then when I had my children, I felt like I can’t say what they needed to do if I did not follow in my own footsteps, so here I am creating footprints in the sand. My husband and children are very proud of me and keep me focused on my end goal and that is graduation!

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I chose Ĵý because it was a great school that offered working people an opportunity to attend school according to their schedule.

How has your degree from Ĵý assisted you in your career?

Ĵý Professional Studies Program offered me a degree in Business Administration and are providing me skills in these courses that I can use at work and my home life.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

I would encourage students to choose a major that you are truly passionate about, you have to love what you are learning, know what your goals are, remain focused, and keep your eye on the prize.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

My family keeps me motivated and I actually love the courses that I am taking.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

I look forward to seeing my family and friends as I am walking across that stage with pride in May 2019!

Hello! My Name Is…

Hello, my name is Matthew Miller and I am a student in Ĵý’s GPS Business Administration Program. I grew up in Midlothian, VA and have lived here all of my life. I work at UPS Freight’s Corporate Office in Richmond, VA where I am a Supplemental Logistics and Transport Driver Manager. I have two beautiful little girls, nine and four, that are everything to me. My mother is a nurse, and my father is retired due to medical conditions. I have two older brothers, as well as a niece and three nephews. My hobbies include golfing, working out, hiking, and spending time at the beach and mountains with my family.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

My motivation for obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration is because of my two daughters, and family, and most of all for myself. I stay motivated in obtaining my degree so I can provide a comfortable life for my two daughters and myself. I am also motivated because I want to continue to move up at my company and strive for greatness, and by obtaining my degree this will put me one step closer to achieving that goal.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I chose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professionals Studies Program because I had heard great things about the program. My uncle actually attended the GPS program and loved it. I also chose it because it is close to home, and they have an off-site location where I can go if I ever need assistance. It truly has been an amazing program and the faculty and professors are really there to ensure you succeed, and the help and guidance has just been amazing.

How has your degree from Ĵý assisted you in your career?

My degree, which I am currently still obtaining, is going to help assist me in my career through leadership, direction, statistical and analytic information throughout the logistics field that I work in. After I obtain my degree, I am planning to move into the Master’s Program in Business Administration with a focus in Leadership. With obtaining, these two degrees, the sky is the limit at UPS Freight. It is such a great company to work for, and when you work hard, you are rewarded. My goal is to keep climbing the ranks in management and hopefully one day, move into the executive positions.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

The advice that I would give to current and incoming students is to stick with it. I know things come up, and sometimes you feel overwhelmed. In the GPS program at Ĵý, the professors and staff really go out of their way to help make sure you have the best experience possible. Stick with the program and great things are sure to come your way. It is such a great opportunity for working professionals to reach their goals and be able to obtain their degree through a fast-paced, but comfortable experience.

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

My two daughters, work, and family all help to keep me motivated while obtaining my degree. Knowing that I am setting up a better future for myself and my two daughters, knowing I am going to continue to move up at work, and my family being proud of me. All of these things are what keep me motivated.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

I will finish my courses in March of 2019, and I will be graduating from Ĵý’s GPS program with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. I want to thank all of the staff and professors at Ĵý. It really has been a pleasure working with everyone there. Thank you, and Go Cougars!

Hello! My Name Is…

Hi, My name is Katie Whisenant and I am a 30 year old living in a small town nobody has ever heard of in Southeast, Virginia, married to my best friend, Brandon. I practiced ultrasound clinically for a few years and then transitioned to a clinicalmedical sales roll a few years ago. I haven’t looked back. I travel quite a bit for work so there’s nothing I enjoy more than just being at home with my family, friends and our dog, Des.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Ĵý?

I decided to finish my degree because I feel like your bachelors is kind of a basic or “necessity”in today’s world and it’s only going to get morecompetitive in the future. I don’t want to look back one day and wish I had done it sooner.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I had a few friends that had gone through Ĵý and they highly recommended it. I actually looked at a few other Universities before settling on Ĵý and none of them were as helpful in getting me through the process of getting started. Ifelt like they were gearedmore towards college aged kids whowere not workingfull time while also trying to finish their degrees.

The process of applying toĴýand getting started was extremely easy and I loved that my courses were laid out for me from the beginning. Iknow exactly what I’m taking from now until graduation.

How has your degree from Ĵý assisted you in your career?

I am still somewhat early in my courses with Ĵý but in the future I plan on using my degree to help with career advancement opportunities within my company that require a bachelor’s degree.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS Program?

Just do it! The time is going to pass anyway so you might as well get started!

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

With each class that comes to a close, I feel more and more accomplished and I know that I am making good use of my time. Just knowing that in the future, there ispotential for growth and more opportunitiesis enough motivation for me!

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

Ĵý, December 2019

“I’ve always been a person that’s been a manager or supervised in businesses but never really reaped the benefits from it. When it comes to the weight that these degrees hold, especially in the business world, the opportunities are endless.

I always wanted to come to Ĵý, but I really didn’t feel like I had the goods. There’s people right here in this institution who help you. This place goes above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to making sure we have everything we need and we’re well equipped when we finish our degrees. It wasn’t easy for me to finish this, and I had a lot of support all over this university. When times got tough, and I wanted to quit – I persevered.

My motivation for obtaining my degree at Ĵý is to expand my career in Supply Chain and to obtain better career opportunities. Also, make a better life for my family but most of all do it for myself because this is what I want to do.

Why did you choose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I chose Ĵý’s Graduate & Professional Studies Program for several reasons.

The first reason is I can still work and earn a living, but also go to school at the same time. I can take classes online or have face to face classes. What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Ĵý’s GPS program?

To be honest, I am still new at this. However, I can say since starting in September of 2017, it has been a positive experience. The professors that I have had always answer any questions I may have. I am doing this for myself, my family, and my career.
